Special Education Services
Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) is unique to Special Education. WAC 392-172A-01175 defines SDI as adapting, as appropriate to the needs of an eligible student, the content, methodology, or delivery of instruction: To address the unique needs of the student that result from the student's disability; and To ensure access of the student to the general curriculum, so that the student can meet the educational standards within the jurisdiction of the public agency that apply to all students. SDI may be provided to student in the General education classroom or in a Special Education classroom.
Students who qualify for Special Education, may receive additional Services or Related Serviices. These services include speech and language therapy, behavioral health services, physical therapy, occupational therapy, specialized physical education, transportation and assistive technology.
Cape Flattery School District participates in ChildFind activities. These ChildFind activities help locate children who may have a disability or are suspected of having a disability. This search includes all children residing within our district. If your child is under three years of age, we will help you connect with local agencies providing services. For children over the age of three, we work with families to to determine students needs and provide services.
By law we are required to provide Special Education services to students in the Lease Restrictive Environment (LRE) possible. In order to support all students in the General education classroom, we embrace the use of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Inclusionary Practices (IP). The goal of both UDL and IP is to provide students with more options for learning in their regular classroom in order to reduce thir time away from their peers.
An Individual Education Program (IEP) is developed with annual goals and objectives to address the individual needs of a student who qualifies for Special Education. An IEP is developed by a team of individuals including the student, parent, regular education teacher, special education teacher, principal, speech language pathologist (if applicable), physical therapist (if applicable), occupational therapist (if applicable), and school psychologist. The IEP is reviewed and updated at least once a year; it may be updated more frequently if needed. We encourage you to participate fully in your child’s education program, including participating in the IEP meetings. You know your child the best, so your input is of great value when planning and providing an educational program for your student.
If you have concerns about your child’s Special Education program, please contact the Director of Special Education, by emailing SpecialEducation@cfsd401.org.
