Our Second Home: Why We Need the Clallam Bay Library

Posted Date: 04/02/26 (04:13 PM)

If you happen to walk into the Clallam Bay Library during the monthly middle school visit, you won’t find a room full of people whispering "shh." Instead, you’ll find a group of middle schoolers who have claimed the space as their own. To the students of Clallam Bay Middle School, the library isn't just a place where books live—it’s a workshop, a kitchen, and a vital sanctuary.

For these students, the monthly Youth Program is the highlight of the calendar. It’s a place where "learning" looks a lot like getting your hands messy and trying something new for the first time.

"[The library] got me into reading," says seventh grader Jacey Angulo. It’s a simple statement that carries the weight of a lifelong gift, sparked by a program that meets kids where they are.

.A Place to Create and Connect

The activities offered are far from your standard classroom fare. Students aren't just reading about art; they’re making it. Whether it's the "nail yarn thing" or the anticipation of tie-dying t-shirts, the library provides a creative outlet that many students rely on.

"I love to go to the library because it gets me out of school and the arts and crafts are fun," explains eighth grader Jonah Pimental. That sentiment of "getting out of school" while still staying engaged is a recurring theme. Seventh grader Leonidas Perry agrees: "The drawing we get to do is cool and the nail yarn thing we got to do is cool and can't wait to do the tie-dye."

More Than Just "After School"

Beyond the glitter and the yarn, there is a deeper sense of gratitude for the safety the library provides. In a small town, having a supervised, warm, and welcoming space is a necessity.

"I like that the library lets our class do fun activities," says seventh grader Ciarah Adams. "But even when you don't do activities like that, we get to look at books and check them out for free. Lots of people in my class go to the library after school for fun or to be in a safe space to wait for rides home."

She notes that the library serves everyone, from kids to adults looking for a quiet workspace. Her conclusion is a stark reminder of the library's role: "Without the library, kids would need to find another safe place for after school."

Why the Levy Matters

This vibrant, noisy, creative hub is currently at a crossroads. The upcoming Library Levy isn't just about buildings and budgets; it’s about ensuring that Ciarah, Jonah, Leonidas, and Jacey continue to have a safe place to go.

The levy restores the funding necessary to keep these youth programs free and maintains the staff and hours that make the library a "second home" for our students. It is an investment in the safety of our children and the literacy of our future.
